About F-R-E-E-Writing

It is no coincidence that both Jo in Lovers’ Hollow and and Izzy in A Dance in Time write their way to resolution.sand free This is my tribute to the power of writing, specifically to its ability to heal — and to liberate.

Writing is the uniquely human experience.  Birds, dolphins and other species communicate but only we can write.  And writing  is what (literally) underwrites all the other significant human achievements — maths, science, philosophy, history, cinema… you name it.

And, of course, literature.

Writing is such a miracle. Through marks on a page, mind can whisper to mind across vast continents and dead generations.

Equally miraculous, I believe, is the power writing gives us to improve our communication with, understanding of, ourselves.

My interest in this has led me to the technique I call F-R-E-E-Writing, a simple method that is proven to:

  • improve mental, physical and emotional health
  • deepen spiritual awakeness
  • foster creative breakthrough.

I came to the concept many years ago through the work of Dorothea Brande.  It power was confirmed for me again and again by experiences in teaching creativity, its processes and principles, to all kinds of groups interested in very different creative outcomes — African immigrants to Ireland, who were trying to create the best experience for their families in a sometimes hostile environment; writers on my Get It Written course; MA Women’s Studies students; addicts recovering from drug abuse; groups who wanted to improve their relationship with money;  and many others.

My understanding and belief in F-R-E-E-Writing’s power was reinforced by the work of researchers like James Pennebaker, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas and master teacher/artists like Julia Cameron, Louise de Salvo and Natalie Goldberg.

F-R-E-E-Writing has made such a difference in my own life that it is now my daily practice. I have seen it make such a difference in other lives that I pass it on whenever I can.

F-R-E-E stands for writing Fast, Raw and Exact-but-Easy (See F-R-E-E-Writing Tutorial).  Using this method the aim is to write fast enough to get beyond our censoring, conscious minds to access subconscious levels.  I have introduced this easy writing method to experienced and emerging writers and artists of all kinds — but also to postgraduate students and returners-to-work, and all kinds of everyone.  I have witnessed its benefits among people from different countries, cultures and classes, at every level of social and personal development — even those with very underdeveloped literacy.

I can teach the same simple technique, over and over, without ever tiring of it because my respect for F-R-E-E-Writing’s complex potential, continues to expand and deepen.

I have come to see F-R-E-E-Writing not as a luxury for those with the time to do it but a simple, significant shortcut to emotional and artistic wellbeing.

A daily brushing of the psyche, that takes a little bit longer – though not much – than a good brushing and flossing of the teeth.

I have come to believe that everybody who can be, should be, F-R-E E Writing.
