F-r-e-e-writing For Writers: Write faster, Write better and Love Writing more

F-r-e-e-writing has kept me healthy and happy for three decades. Without it, I’d probably be in a twelve-step program by now or locked away somewhere, to protect family and friends. The side of me that likes to snivel and snark, distress and despair, would have leaked into my life much more had I not safely siphoned it off onto the page. To me, f-r-e-e-writing is the best tool in a conscious creator’s toolkit and that of course goes for writers too. Writing fast, raw and exact-and-easy is the key to writing free. I love to pass it on whenever I can. F-r-e-e-writing…

Self-Publishing Authors At Amazon Academy

I spent Wednesday at Amazon’s very cool Fashion Studio in Hoxton, speaking about the author journey and the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), for the UK’s first Amazon Academy. Enterprise Nation, partnering with Amazon and the Guardian Small Business Network, delivered a day of insights into how small business owners can use digital technology to increase online sales and exports. More than 200 creative entrepreneurs gathered in London on 23 November for the event, including lots of aspiring and emerging indie authors, and a number of ALLi members. Three bestselling authors — Mark Dawson, Talli Roland and Joseph Alexander — were speaking…

Creative Publishing: Awards & Prizes, Events & Courses, Ireland & Irish Writing

The Winner of The CAP Awards To Be Announced Tonight

The Carousel Aware Prize for the best independently published books in Ireland will be announced tonight, at a gala event in Dublin. I’m honored that Her Secret Rose is shortlisted in the Best Novel category and sad that, for personal reasons, I can’t travel to Ireland to be there. It’s going to be a great evening. It very fitting, because Ireland’s most famous poet, WB Yeats, one of the protagonists of the novel, was a self-publisher, through the printing press his sisters ran, Cuala Press. From long before Yeats’s time up to the contemporary Booker prizewinner Roddy Doyle, self-publishing has been important to Irish…

Interview About ALLi On The Self-Publishing Formula Podcast

I had great fun talking all things self-publishing with the lovely James Blatch on the Self-Publishing Formula podcast, which he runs with novelist Mark Dawson. James is just starting out on his writing career, Mark is a phenomenal bestseller and together they make courses that make a real difference to authors’ lives and livelihoods — most famously, so far, their Facebook for Authors course. I was thrilled to be invited onto their podcast, which focusses how authors can make a living telling stories. Like me, James and Mark both know there’s never been a better time to be a writer. And how to make the most…

Launching Secret Rose in Ireland: Daring To Dream, Daring To Do

In a few hours time, I’ll launch Secret Rose, my special edition two-in-one book tribute to WB Yeats. I’ll write soon about how it went and what I said… (I never know all in advance, so much depends on the group and the energy in the room). What I do know: I’ll be talking about the dream of writing this book, where it came from, what it took to do it… and why (the subject of another post soon). I’ll sign each book with: “It takes a great reader to make a great book. Thank you for reading.” Yeats is easy to read…

Hawkesbury Upton Literary Festival: Celebrating Indie Writing and Reading

My dear friend and sister indie author, Debbie Young, recently told me that she is starting a literature festival to celebrate books and reading. It didn’t come as a surprise. Debbie is known to us all for her zeal in bookish activities, locally and nationally. Nevertheless, she is one busy lady, with her family, her work for ALLi, her own books and assorted voluntary and village activities. So why a literary festival? Why I Founded the Hawkesbury Upton Literature Festival Having founded a village fun-run four years ago, I had first-hand experience of how receptive our village is to new ventures…
