Creative Living: Excerpts

Today’s Book Extract: From The Psychology Of Creative Success

Here are some quotes from well-known creatives who offer their definitions of success, and thereby offer you a window into thinking about your own definition. (For “man” in these quotes, obviously please read also woman. Oh and men, can you please stop doing that?) Below the quotes, you’ll find questions to help you to establish your own definition. For best results, f-r-e-e-write your answers to these questions. (You can find out more about f-r-e-e-writing here). “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to…

The Go Creative! Show

The Go Creative! Show is a new weekly broadcast I’m going to be doing, all about applying the creative process to everything in life. And today, I’ve launched the first episode, which welcomes you to the show and tells you what to expect. Just like here on the blog, I’ll be sharing insights, ideas and inspirations, about creative writing and creative publishing, but mostly about creative living. I’ll be: reading from, and talking about, my novels and poems. bringing news from ALLi, the self-publishing advice centre and the Indie Author Fringe online conferences. sharing my own attempts at conscious creation beyond writing and publishing,…

The Creative Breathwork Series: Beat Block & Foster Flow #7: Inspiration Meditation

The essence of Inspiration Meditation is the soundless vibration of internal creative energy.  A form of mantra meditation, it focuses the mind and draws your attention inwards, leading to progressively higher and deeper states of creative consciousness, fostering imagination, ideas and insight. This meditation method uses sound [words] together with the absence of sound [the silent space between the words] as its focus. It integrates sound and space, words and silence and has three components: A word phrase. The spaces between the words of the phrase. The sound of “All”. Words have great power. Because language is so everyday, we…

The Creative Breathwork Series: Beat Block & Foster Flow #6: Between The Words Breathing

Adopt the usual position With eyelids closed, bring your eyes to look into the left corner of the left eye and see your first name, your given name, imprinted there and sound the sound of your name slowly in your mind, three times. Keeping eyelids closed, bring your eyes towards the right corner of the right eye, and see your surname, your family name, imprinted there and sound the sound of your surname slowly in your mind, three times. Bring your eyes center, to the place known as the “third eye”, and enter the space between the words. Breathe into…

 #5: 4-7-8 Breathing

Adopt the usual position. Close you mouth and place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise. You will be exhaling through your mouth around your tongue. Become aware of your breath. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. Through the mouth, take in a long, deep breath, counting slowly to four in your head: 1-2-3-4. Hold the breath for a count of seven:1-2-3-4-5-6-7. Slowly release the breath to a count of eight: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. Keep your attention fully on your breath throughout….

The Creative Breathwork Series: Beat Block & Foster Flow #4: Bellows Breathing

This breathing exercise raises vital energy and increases alertness. Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed but relaxed. Your breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. This is a noisy breathing exercise. Try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. This produces a quick movement of the diaphragm, suggesting a bellows. Breathe normally after each cycle. Do not do for more than 15 seconds on your first try. Each time you practice the Bellows Breath, you can increase your time by five seconds or so, until you reach a…

The Creative Breathwork Series: Beat Block & Foster Flow. #3: Counting The Breath

This is a technique much used by Zen Buddhist meditators. Adopt the usual position. First, let the breath come naturally without trying to influence it. Settle yourself on yourself. To begin the exercise, count “one” to yourself as you exhale. The next time you exhale, count “two,” and so on up to “five.” Then begin a new cycle, counting “one” on the next exhalation. Never count higher than “five,” and count only when you exhale. You will know your attention has wandered when you find yourself up to “eight,” “12,” even “19.” Try to do 10 minutes of this form…

Creative Is The Opposite To Consumerist

Going creative is a choice that the conventional world doesn’t want you to make. Convention prefers you to play safe, to avoid adventure and opiate yourself with TV, pornified sex, cheap romance and mindless consumerism. Included in that conventional world is your own “con-mind state”, your own conventional intelligence. You may well prefer wanting and wishing to working and making. Lots of people do. The creative process is powerful and that means it can be powerfully disruptive. While the process is always moving us towards happiness and freedom, it is also always challenging our assumptions and attitudes and calling for change….

The Creative Breathwork Series: Beat Block & Foster Flow. #1: Follow Your Breath

The breath, like creative inspiration, comes of itself. We can consciously influence it, but only in part. Largely, it just flows. This is one of the great mysteries of human being. Where does this flow come from, where does it go? This exercise will teach you to notice your breath and how it feels to notice it. It seems so simple but nothing is more transformational. Creative Life, Creative Breath When you were born, the first thing somebody did for you was clear your airways and make sure you were breathing. Breath and life are intimately connected. To stay alive, we must keep breathing….
