how david bowie finds creative success

Finding Fame: David Bowie’s Eleven Years To Overnight Creative Success

This week I’ve been watching the BBC documentary, Finding Fame, the final part of a riveting trilogy about David Bowie, this one focussing on how he found creative success. It’s a sign of how good this trilogy is that it finishes with the early years, rather than doing it in chronological order. Those years are highly revealing. In 1973, David Bowie became an international superstar with his persona of Ziggy Stardust. But like most overnight successes, it was many years in the making. Eleven, to be precise. With lots of backing bands, chart flops, creative failures, experimentation and exploration along…

Go Creative Advice From Comedian Ben Elton: How To Improvise

Each week we feature a well known creative or creativist talking about some aspect of creative business. It’s Go Creative Advice from Ben Elton this week:  Go with the flow and don’t be afraid to improvise. Everything about my profession and creative life has been an improvisation. The only way I can work is to follow my heart and follow what I feel like doing. I certainly didn’t think,”well, I’ll sit down and write a novel – that’s what’s needed next! ” or, “the best move for me would be…” I do what I feel like doing… my work emerges by instinct, not…

core offering
: Be More Creative, Creative Business

As A Creative Entrepreneur You Must Know Your Core Offering

A creative entrepreneur’s core offerings is.. well, core. That’s what I’ve been thinking about this week as my refocus continues. Joanna Penn and I discussed core offerings and how to refocus an author business in our monthly salon for the Alliance of Independent Authors. You can watch the video here. In the past, creatives suffered from lack of opportunity, now it’s the opposite. There are as many opportunities as you can create time for, with the internet, and Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Amazon, Google… The real challenge is to have something to say, to have the solidity of substance and depth. This is where…

Go Positive
: Be More Creative, Creative Business

Go Creative Means Go Positive: Just Say Yes

There are many ways to say “no” but “yes” is the default attitude of the creative. This is too hard. I can’t. I won’t. That’s ridiculous. I’ll do it later. People will laugh… Add your own personal favorites here: ____________ Ennui, apathy, depression, self-obsession, agitation, anxiety and stress are all forms of “no”, of resistance to what is. All are incompatible with creative consciousness. No Often Wastes Thought and Energy Yes moves with the flow of life — as it is, now. Generally speaking, it leads to less thinking and more doing. Of course, there are times when you need to say No. Of…

Making a living from your passion
: Be More Creative, Creative Business

The Blog is Back

Happy New Year! And thank you for your patience while we made the background changes necessary to get the Creativist Club up and running and my own head shift, as I move into this space of creative entrepreneurship, which I define as making a living from your passion. Most of the creatives in ALLi and the Creativist Club would like to transition to full time creative work, running their own creative enterprise. That’s going to be the focus of this blog for the next year, alongside my own writing, of course. As I put together the Go Creative! series, I find…

Sunday Read: Preview of The Psychology of Creative Success

Each time I teach a new class about conscious creation I have a moment of excited anticipation as the new students file in. Already, though I haven’t met them yet, I know two important things about these people. They have a creative block of some kind, are, despite their best effort, unable to succeed at something that’s important to them. Secondly, and more importantly, they are willing to open up, to find out why and get moving. Already I love them for that. The honesty that’s brought them here, the openness to change, the willingness to do understand more, to turn up,…
