Create Date: Writing Retreat in Wexford, Ireland

Once a year I take myself off for a writing retreat in Ireland, always a highlight for me. It’s bliss to be able to focus on my own work for a few days and to return to the peace and quiet and stunning beauty of Wexford, where I grew up, where my Irish trilogy is set.

woman still a gender issue

Create Date: Is Being a Woman Still a Gender Issue Today?

The Kiss My Genders exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre was the site for my create date this week. This exhibition was unsettling in all the right ways, as expected. What I didn’t expect was to emerge asking myself the question: Is being a woman still a gender issue today? A little background. Gender is a topic that interests me, intensely. I have an MA in women’s studies and for many years lectured in creativity and culture at the women’s studies department at University College Dublin. Many people have forgotten how the concept of gender emerged in the 1980s and 90s…

The Perfect Workspace For Today's Writer
: Create Dates, Creative Business

Create Date: From Study To Studio: The Perfect Workspace For Authors Today

What makes the perfect workspace? I’m in the middle of creating mine. I used to have a traditional study lined with print books but for a long while now it’s not really fitting my needs. It’s made me think: what makes the perfect workspace for an indie author today? Since I started work as a writer, three decades ago, my workspace has always been been a traditional sort of writer’s space. Lined with bookshelves, with a soft chair, a leather-inlaid desk, on which–these days–an Apple Mac desktop sits, perhaps a little uneasily. Being surrounded by books used to be essential to…

How To Pitch Influencers: Make It Mechanical

One of the most rapid and reliable ways to grow our creative business is to pitch other influencers with great ideas and content. And the most rapid and reliable way to pitch influencers is to make it mechanical. Influencers are those who work in the same niche or micro-niche as us, who have larger or different audiences. Among consumers, trust in advertising is at an all-time low but working with trusted influencers brings the trust their followers have in them to us. Successful creative business often relies more on these networks of relationships than on conventional forms of advertising. It can be immensely rewarding, creatively…

create date park-walking

This Week’s Create Date: Park Walking

On Saturdays, I write about my create-dates (one of the recommended Go Creative! flow practices, a date with yourself, doing something that feels totally like fun). This week I spent my create date park walking. And taking some photos of the beautiful autumn day. As a create-date, it was utterly restorative and I also (bonus!) got a short poem from it. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.     Create Date Park Walking. A New Poem Park Walking In the falling of the day I think I must take a walk in the falling of the leaves in beloved…

John Copeland

This Week’s Create Date: John Copeland’s Art Exhibition: Your Heaven Looks Just Like My Hell

This week’s create date was an art gallery visit. At the instigation of The Daughter, I finally got round to visiting Newport Street Gallery, Damien Hirst’s gorgeous gift to London. The first thing you meet is a room full of beautiful topless or barely bra-ed women. And then another. Some of them are mirrored or doubled, some have their facial features obscured. They have blobs and flurries of abstract expressionist brushstrokes all over them. The titles are thought-provoking and amusing. “A Difficult Set of Instructions” where geometery meets violence; “My Favourite Terrible Ideas” two topless women with brightly colored hair; “And I Cursed the Sun for…

Phantom Thread

Create Date: Phantom Thread

Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest movie, is one every creative should see. It stars the genius actor, Daniel Day Lewis, in what is reputedly his final role, but his co-stars Lesley Manville and Vicky Krieps, also shine in this exquisite three-hander. Going to see it was my create date this week. (Taking a create date is a weekly practice for creatives and creative entrepreneurs, that keeps you steady and creatively attuned. Find out more here). An immaculately elegant period piece, set in the world of 1950s London haute couture, Phantom Thread is magnificently scripted, acted, lit, scored, directed and costumed, and made for a delectable  create…

Ingmar Bergman's Persona
: Create Dates, Creative Business, Creative Practice

Create Date: Ingmar Bergman’s Persona

What is A Create Date? Once a week, you: Ask yourself: “what feels like the most fun I could have?” Schedule the time and place, as you would any other appointment. When the time comes, allow yourself to do it. It can feel trivial but it’s a deep creative practice. Expect resistance but go do it anyway. Creativist Club Members: You can keep track of your Create Dates with the Monthly Create Date Log, downloadable from The Library For my create date this week, I went to see a 40-year-old film: Persona. The BFI is doing an Ingmar Bergman retrospective and I’d never seen…

Create Date with Grace Jones

Create Date: Bloodlight and Bami with Grace Jones

This week I enjoyed a create date with one of my longtime icons, the beautiful, thrilling, comic, creative master, Grace Jones, filmed by Sophie Fiennes in and “official” biopic, Bloodlight and Bami. “Bloodlight” is the Jamaican words for the red light that comes on when an artist is recording in studio and “bami” for bread. One of the revelations of the movie is that Grace speaks at least four languages, and three of them are versions of English: her voice, expression and gestures change completely, depending on whether she is speaking American English, English English or Jamaican English. Filmed over…

Creative Living: Create Date with Artist Keith Tyson

For this week’s create date, I took a last day with Keith Tyson, 2002 Turner Prize Winner, at Jerwood Gallery’s Turn Back Now exhibition, before it left Hastings. Tyson is an unassuming Northerner with a beard and specs, who uses the universe as his muse, creating art in almost every form, from painting and drawing to sculptures and machines. And he’s inspiringly prolific. The Jerwood was featuring the Studio Wall Drawings he calls “headline of the day”, a daily outpouring which he began back in 1997, as a way to explore creativity within the confines of a small studio. He continues to do…
