Judging Kindle Storyteller Award UK 2018

One of the highlights of my year is judging Kindle Storyteller and while I was thrilled, obviously, to be in Nashville for Digital Book World, I really wish I could have cloned myself to be at Amazon Storyteller Awards tonight. For those who don’t know, Amazon’s Storyteller Award is an annual award for fiction and non-fiction. This year, it was open to writers in English across any genre who published their book through Kindle Direct Publishing before 31 August 2018. The book had to be previously unpublished and available as an ebook and in print. The award is to recognize outstanding storytelling and the…

Creative Publishing: Digital Book Marketing for Orna Ross: A Step-by-Step Guide to AMS Ads

A weekly column by digital book marketer, Caoimhe O’Brien. Amazon Marketing Services paid advertising options might seem daunting, complicated and a potential money drain to the inexperienced author but I hope to make the process a little less complicated. I’m relatively new to AMS and in the same position as lot of authors approaching it for the first time with some cautiousness. So I hope that what I’ve learned will help you to approach Amazon ads with more confidence and positivity. I have just set the ad for After the Rising today, so below is my guide to setting up. Next…

Creative Publishing: Digital Book Marketing for Orna Ross. This week: The Wonder of Blurbs

A weekly column by digital book marketer, Caoimhe O’Brien. This week we have been re-writing some of Orna’s blurbs for her fiction books. Blurbs are so important to get right as they are one of the first thing that a reader sees when they look at your book on Amazon, Kobo, iBooks… The best blurbs are easy to read, genre appropriate, and grab a reader’s attention right away. You should always be conscious of what appears above the Read More button (see below), as you want to ensure that the reader is enticed to click through and read to the…

Creative Publishing: Digital Book Marketing For Orna Ross 2: Keywords, Categories & KDP Rocket

A weekly column by Digital Marketer, Caoimhe O’Brien This was my second week working on Orna’s books and, even though we’re still in the initial setting-up period, the work is getting more detailed and specific to each book which I really enjoy. Being organized initially is hugely important for marketing success, whether you have one book or twenty. It can take some time at first but will definitely save you time (and confusion) in the long run. Keeping track of dates, sales figures and money spent is so important and it makes comparing the results of different marketing campaigns much…

Staying in Start-Up

So the first week of January is over. Are the new year’s creative intentions beginning to flag? It’s understandable. Finishing a task is an event. An outcome. A visible achievement. But starting is just starting. Take running a marathon or publishing a book. Crossing the finishing line, having a book launch: these are events. Life before looks different to life after. Starting isn’t like that. When you

Because I Like It

Regular readers will be aware of my admiration of the Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, known by his students and followers as Thay (“teacher”). When one of those students approached him with a question: “Why should I meditate?”, Thay’s answer was swift and – as always – profoundly simple: “Because you like it”. Why write a symphony? Because you like it. Why put up a
