The Sequence of Success in Creative Business.

This post proposes a sequence of success in creative business, a step-by-step way in which a creative business can conceived, built and established,  the creative way. You begin with an inward search to find your passion point, proceed through preparation, pitching, production and understanding your own process and your business processes, and expand by reaching out to others through partnerships and publications. These are the Seven Ps the create a successful creative business: Passion, Preparation, Pitching, Production, Process, Publishing and Partnership. You will progress with more ease and fluidity if you tackle them in that order. Following them in the correct sequence optimizes flow and maximizes your impact,…

As A Creative Entrepreneur You Must Know Your Core Offering

A creative entrepreneur’s core offerings is.. well, core. That’s what I’ve been thinking about this week as my refocus continues. Joanna Penn and I discussed core offerings and how to refocus an author business in our monthly salon for the Alliance of Independent Authors. You can watch the video here. In the past, creatives suffered from lack of opportunity, now it’s the opposite. There are as many opportunities as you can create time for, with the internet, and Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Amazon, Google… The real challenge is to have something to say, to have the solidity of substance and depth. This is where…

Sunday Inspirational Poetry: Dark Night

Sunday Inspirational Poetry: Dark Night As creative entrepreneurs, we’re doers by definition. But sometimes, when things get hard it’s not about doing, it’s about lying low and doing nothing. Not even thinking. This is a poem for the days when things get hard. Dark Night: A New Poem Sunday is lazy day for me, so here on the blog each Sunday I reprise one of my inspirational poems about some aspect of creative working and living. For as little as $2 a month, you can become a poetry patron and receive books and other bonuses and exclusive poetry written just for…

2018. Week 12: What Are You Creating This Week?

I’m home from Madeira, refreshed and relaxed if not as sun-kissed as I’d hoped. Photo left shows the kind of weather we got. That’s a wave breaking on our beach and color settings on the camera, not black and white. It’s a measure of the loveliness of the island that we had a wonderful time.  Our March Go Creative! workshop was a little late this month, because of my holiday. If you missed it, you can catch up here: watch the video replay here. We’ll have a full transcript shortly for those of you who prefer text mode. Meantime, I asked the lovely…

Creative Writing: My Haiku

Haiku of the Week Features: Homeless

Beneath the / promenade of stately homes: / the homeless. Now Your Turn: Capture a moment of creative presence: Write a 3-7-3 or a 5-7-5 haiku. Here’s how. Use the 13 or 17 syllables to give a short summation of a moment: what you saw, heard, touched, tasted or smelled. Turn the moment in time into an image. Don’t tell us what happened, show us. Don’t tell us how you felt. Trust the images, the sense perception, to hold the emotion. A good haiku conveys a mood, without mentioning the person or mood. Every place, every moment in time, is full…

Your Monday Motivator: Kicking Off A Creative Intention Series

So, we’re more than halfway through January. How are those new year resolutions coming along? If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I’m not a big fan of relying on will-based discipline to creating what you want to create in your life. It doesn’t work too well for most of us, especially creative types. According to market researchers Opinion Research Corp., 92% of us go about our daily lives failing to create what we most want. Whether our desire is physical (as, in their study, 38% of the desires); emotional (31%), financial (34%) or, interestingly the biggest…

Creativist Me, Creativist World. This Week: What We Leave Behind

I’m going to die! No, I’m not being dramatic and no, there’s nothing wrong with me beyond the fact that life is, as a Polish film once said, a fatal, sexually-transmitted condition. They actually said sexually-transmitted disease and I have to say, I think that’s going a bit far. But I take the point. We’re all going to die. And we all spend a lot of energy avoiding or resisting that. Remembrance of Things Past I recently found myself at two memorials. The first was a sunny autumn morning in which our family planted a tree in our local park for Anne, my dear…

Setting Good Intentions: Creative Listing

Creative listing is a core creative exercise which supports your creative intention. Use it whenever you set a new intention, to help establish and map its parameters and what you need to fulfill it. Here’s how: 1. Frame your intention I am going to create _________  by _________, the first blank being your significant something, the second the date by which you will create it. If your intention is a life-change — to become an actor, to leave your partner — set down the first step in the process, as you see it. The date is important, put a date-stamp on it. 2. Visualize and…
