Self-Publishing Authors At Amazon Academy

I spent Wednesday at Amazon’s very cool Fashion Studio in Hoxton, speaking about the author journey and the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), for the UK’s first Amazon Academy. Enterprise Nation, partnering with Amazon and the Guardian Small Business Network, delivered a day of insights into how small business owners can use digital technology to increase online sales and exports. More than 200 creative entrepreneurs gathered in London on 23 November for the event, including lots of aspiring and emerging indie authors, and a number of ALLi members. Three bestselling authors — Mark Dawson, Talli Roland and Joseph Alexander — were speaking…

Interview About ALLi On The Self-Publishing Formula Podcast

I had great fun talking all things self-publishing with the lovely James Blatch on the Self-Publishing Formula podcast, which he runs with novelist Mark Dawson. James is just starting out on his writing career, Mark is a phenomenal bestseller and together they make courses that make a real difference to authors’ lives and livelihoods — most famously, so far, their Facebook for Authors course. I was thrilled to be invited onto their podcast, which focusses how authors can make a living telling stories. Like me, James and Mark both know there’s never been a better time to be a writer. And how to make the most…

Ten reasons to F-R-E-E-Write

F-R-E-E-Writing rights. At a daily level, it improves your psychic state, elevates your mood, makes you feel centred, sets you up for your day. We almost always feels better after a F-R-E-E-Writing session than before. F-R-E-E-Writing uncovers. Because we write as fast as possible, thoughts and emotions are allowed to rise without the internal censor kicking in. This brings us to new understandings — concealed meanings and significances are brought to the surface. Author, Virginia Woolf, calls them “shocks”, those moments of profound insight that come from examining our past, because of how they force an awareness we wouldn’t otherwise…

Final Call: F-R-E-E-Writing Book

Last chance to get your pre-order copy of F-R-E-E-Writing: Unblocking Life’s Flow. It launches Tuesday next, 30th of September. But you can order your advance copy now — without being charged until it’s dispatched. F-R-E-E-Writing  F-R-E-E stands for Fast, Raw and Exact-but-Easy and this is a creative practice I’ve been teaching — and practicing myself, of course — for fifteen years now. Each F-R-E-E-Writing session is a new journey without a map in which you simply write whatever it is you have to say at that moment in time — as fast as you can. When you write like this, you leave yourself open. You…

The Courage To Create

“Why do we do all this: obey, follow, copy? Why? Because we are frightened, inwardly, to be uncertain. We want to be certain. “We want to be certain financially, we want to be certain morally, we want to be approved, we want to be in a safe position, we want never to be confronted with trouble, pain, suffering. We want to be enclosed. “It is fear that, consciously or unconsciously, makes us obey the master, the leader, the priest, the government. Fear also controls us from doing something which may be Read More

Note to Beginner Writers

If you want to be a writer, not just a hack, you’ve got to make writing top of your heap. It has to be, or become, more important to you than two of the following: money, family or friends. It definitely has to be more important than TV. You’ve got to do the work. Lay down sentences and paragraphs, like an athlete lays down miles. Put words through your fingers, like a musician drums scales. Go on your metaphorical knees to the mystery of inspiration, like a priest before an altar.
