Crazy Creative Challenge: One Year, 11 Books

I’ve so many books close to being finished that need me to push them through and over the line. Truth is, I’ve been struggling with the finishing phase of the writing process and driving myself a little nuts. So I’m deciding to get proactive instead of passive nutty, and set myself a crazy creative challenge for 2016. Okay, deep breath… ready…. To publish a book a month for the next eleven months Now to be clear, I’m not completely nuts. And these are not thrown off in three weeks and hardly long enough to be called an article never mind a book…

Any Authors Headed To Florida or Frankfurt?

(pic) Frankfurt Book Fair 2014, talking creativity and commerce with Porter Anderson (centre) and Marcello Veno (r) Anyone headed for Frankfurt or Florida? At Frankfurt Book Fair 2015, on the Self-Publishing day on Saturday, I’ll be talking about how indie authors sell rights and introducing ALLi’s latest guidebook called, (well, what else?): How Authors Sell Rights. I’ll be expanding that with a longer talk at the NINC novelists conference in St Petersburg, Florida, for their First Word program. This focuses on global sales and marketing, exploring opportunities for authors that are opening up overseas. More about both of these events over the coming weeks, but any of…

Self-publishing Literary Fiction In A Boxset

Jane Friedman, one of publishing’s most interesting commentators, is interviewing Roz and Joni about our boxset over on her blog today. “While collaborative efforts like this have been fairly common among genre fiction authors, this is the first box set I know of that represents a marketing collaboration for full-length literary novels,” says Jane. The box set she’s talking about is, of course, our Outside The Box: Women Writing Women, only available until May of this year, at a cost of $9.99. Yes, seven books. (I know!) Read More on Jane’s wonderful website. And learn all about our box set here: http://www.womenwritewomen.com/

ALLi Teams Up With Toby Mundy Associates

I’m very pleased to have organised foreign right representation for ALLi members again. From January 2015, ALLi will be teaming up with Toby Mundy Associates (TMA) to provide a unique subsidiary rights service for author-publishers, through The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi). I first met Toby when we were on a panel together at the Battle of Ideas, though I knew him by repute from his days at Atlantic books (I loved White Tiger, Atlantic’s Man-Booker win). I was impressed by his speech that day, about the importance of long-form writing — books — to the wider culture and intrigued by his move…

How to Use Kindle Public Notes

One of Amazon Kindle’s least known features allows you to peek over the reader’s shoulder, to follow people of interest to you and see their Public Notes on what they’re reading. And once you enable Kindle Public Notes for a particular book, then any of your followers can see the highlights and notes you make, as you read on Kindle. There are some problems with the service. Amazon has chosen to limit each note to 100 characters, which means lots of notes are cut off mid-stream. They also register people as having made Public Notes for a book when they have simply turned…

Inspirations, A New Series. #1: My Father, by Carol Cooper

Carol Cooper is a family doctor, a  well known media medic and an indie author whose novel One Night at the Jacaranda has been nominated for the Indie Excellent Awards 2014. Find out more about Carol here.  It was business as usual even though my father had died in the night. I went on breakfast TV to talk about some health story, saw my patients, did some writing.  In between were carefully timed calls to each of my sons to tell them Granddad had died. All very controlled, composed. The next day I went to Liverpool for a conference. There was…

Yeats Anniversary Celebrations 2015

Yeats activity is hotting up in Ireland, as June 13th 2015 will be the 150th anniversary of his birth. Yesterday was the third annual Yeats Day in Sligo and Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht used the occasion to launch “Yeats 2015”, a year-long national and international celebration. I’ll be publishing Her Secret Rose, the first of my books in ebook form soon. The publication is a little delayed because there is a small press in Ireland that might be interested in putting the print books into bookstores — which would save me a whole lot…

Self-Publishing Authors at BEA

I had a fantastic time at Book Expo America. From ALLi’s perspective, we: launched the update of our Choosing A Self-Publishing Service; presented an award to Mark Coker of Smashwords for service to the author community; took part in a UPublishU panel on publishing pathways, with Hugh Howey, Mark Lefvebre of Kobo, and Steven Spatz of BookBay;  met up with old and new members, colleagues and friends; launched or advanced a number of projects for our members. As an author, it was my first time to experience what BEA has traditionally called “Consumer Day”, (now BookCon) when keen readers pay $30 each for the…

Talking Self-publishing for The Guardian Books Podcast

Yes, once again I’m out and about talking about the freedom and joy of self-publishing, this time on the Guardian Books Podcast, recorded by Richard Lea at the London Book Fair. You’ll enjoy listening to the wonderful Catherine Quinn, who, after her sister told her to stop moping about not having an agent, bit the bullet and sold 150,000 copies of her self-published fiction, then signed with Amazon Publishing. Also there, talking super sense as usual, is Hugh Howey, the wonderful author of the Wool trilogy and great advocate for indie authors, through AuthorEarnings.com. Featured too are The Bookseller’s Philip Jones,…
