I’m interested in these thoughts of Declan Foley, Secretary of The Yeats Society of Victoria, Australia, and a native of Sligo on the proposal by Sligo county council to establish a Yeats Interpretive Centre there.
“Slowly but surely is the appropriate manner to progress,” Foley says, asking key questions of the councillors about its intended audience. “Will it be first and foremost an educational centre on the role of the Yeats family, along with their contemporaries in Irish nationalism, in gaining independence via the arts (rather than creating an income, via increased visitor numbers to Sligo)?
If the answer is yes, “then a long-term plan to evolve the centre over a number of years is required, in preference to a complete project at the outset.”
