Effortless Exercise: My Creative Week 20 2019

The theme of my creative week was effortless exercise, of which more below. But first it’s time to log the week’s accomplishments. In the Go Creative! method, it’s important for us not to just set goals and intentions and to do lists but also to log what we’ve made happen. You’re invited to share your accomplishments in our closed Facebook group, under the headings of producing, processing and positioning. MAKER (Producing): Worked on Part I of a very long poem but no way it’s finishing up this week–it blew open in a whole new direction–so instead, I made my first audiobook, a poetry pamphlet, now…

Creative Flow Workshop: Go Creative! July Event

This month Go Creative! event for creative entrepreneurs was mid-month for the first time and a creative flow workshop. We covered three practices I personally use for keeping creative mind, body and spirit strong and flexible: Effortless Exercise (body) F-r-e-e-Writing (mind) Inspiration Meditation (spirit) And the relevance of flow practice for creativepreneurs (and how inclined we are to skip it!) Many of the creative entrepreneurs on board shared the same frustrations: Overcoming procrastination Setting intentions and sticking with them Overcoming fears Avoiding distractions We had a number of questions on all these topics and Justine had a recommendation for us: her favorite mindfulness…

Why Creative Entrepreneurs Need Three Kinds of Creative Practice

There are three kinds of creative practice for creative entrepreneurs and to make a living doing what you love, you’ll need to understand and practice them all.  It’s not a small goal, what you want to do: turn your passion into sufficient profit to make a living. And so it will ask some big asks of you. You’ll have to grow and stretch and transform. You’ll have to work well, play well and rest well. You’ll have to learn new things, experiment and explore, try and fail and try again until you get it right. You’ll have to put yourself out there in ways that…

Three Creative Practices for Body Mind and Spirit

The Go Creative method offers three forms of creative practice: . Creative Practice: Body: Effortless Exercise Effortless Exercise is moving the body in a way that connects with what it most wants to do in a particular moment. It takes many forms: mindful walking, tai chi, yoga, five rhythms dance, chi running, and many others. It’s the sort of exercise that is: • Individual: You do it on your own, though maybe along with others, it’s not a team or a group sport. • Non-competitive: It’s not a game, there’s no winning or losing, no scores or foul play, no targets…

Creative Coaching Tip 101: Take Your Time

The Go Creative mapping method is based on never having more than three work waves in one day, if you’re working full-time on that intention. If you’re part-time, then one 90-minute wave of work a day. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that isn’t enough time. Bestselling novels have been written in the year using commuting time. Time is a highly mutable substance. The quantity of time you devote to a project matters far less than the quality of your concentration and devotion to your intention and to invoking the create state, day after day, week after week.

Creative Coaching Tip 100: Map Creative Rest and Play as well as Work

In the Go Creative method, we don’t just map and log our work but also our rest and play. Creatives and creativists understand the power of rest and play in allowing the subconscious mind to play its part. In any successful creative project, whether we realize it or not, the subconscious mind has done most of the heavy lifting. Most of the fretting and feelings we brought to the project had very little to do with getting from desire to done. Here are some maps to help you plan your work, rest and play across the day, week and month…

Wild swimming in Florida

As many of you know I love wild swimming…. or as we used to call it in Ireland where I grew up, er, swimming. So when I was invited to speak at the NINC conference I didn’t have to think twice. Not only was it Florida in October, but the very wise women who run this great association hold their conference literally on the beach. I’ll be reporting on the conference over at The Author Advice Centre’s blog on Monday. In between conference sessions, I’ve been running the sands and swimming the waves each day. (No that’s not me in the pic…

Add More Imagination.

The ease with which we create anything is in direct proportion to the amount of imaginative energy we bring to the task. Go deep enough and we find ourselves in flow — that magical sense of being a conduit, of the thing being made through, not by, us. This is the truest and most joyful experience of creativity. Accessing it is, paradoxically, a matter of Read More
