Mapping Your Creative Business 1: Introduction

Over the coming days, I’m running a blog series to accompany the Go Creative! workshops. This series will take you through the stages of setting up, or gearing up, a successful creative business. Downloadable scorecards, maps and logs won’t just explain, but will take you through the process as you do the exercises given. The exercises, maps and logs are designed to steady you, to bring you, wave by dependable wave, through the seven stages from stating your intention (Stage One: “I intend to create a business that enables me to make a living doing what I love”) to being up…

Go Creative Means Go Deeper: Accessing The Create-State

As a creative, I find much business advice mechanical and one-dimensional. It doesn’t speak my language and doesn’t help me to create more, or better. Which are my two measures of whether a book about creative entrepreneurship has worked for me, or not. In most cases, not. One exception is The E-Myth by Michael Gerber. The e-myth stands for “the entrepreneurial myth”, a concept popularized by business coach Michael Gerber. It’s what Gerber calls “the fatal assumption” that if you’re good at what you do, you can successfully run a business around it. Creatives are terrible for this. If the work is…

Go Creative Means Go Enterprising: Find Your Micro-Niche

Your “Mashion” is the point at which your mission and passion meet. Once you find this niche area, your future becomes clear, and you find your past was perfect too. Everything has been leading to here. You’ll enjoy a burst of energy. You might find yourself sitting up all night, working, writing, producing, playing without even feeling tired. Everything is just as it should be. You feel ready to face fears and take risks. You feel excited. It feels like fun and you want to look after yourself so you’ll be able to do the necessary. Daniel Priestley, of Dent…

Go Creative Means Go High: Find Your Mission

The American psychologist Jerome Kagan says meaning is “the human cobweb”. To know anything about spiders, you have to understand the one thing that makes them unlike all other insects: They make cobwebs. To know about human beings you have to understand that what we make is meaning. We attribute things and experience with an importance that is way above and beyond their objective value. We give ourselves over to certain feelings and ideas and dedicate time, energy and thought to weaving them into a web of significance. When we dedicate ourselves to something higher than ourselves, to improving life…

Go Creative Means Go Positive: Just Say Yes

There are many ways to say “no” but “yes” is the default attitude of the creative. This is too hard. I can’t. I won’t. That’s ridiculous. I’ll do it later. People will laugh… Add your own personal favorites here: ____________ Ennui, apathy, depression, self-obsession, agitation, anxiety and stress are all forms of “no”, of resistance to what is. All are incompatible with creative consciousness. No Often Wastes Thought and Energy Yes moves with the flow of life — as it is, now. Generally speaking, it leads to less thinking and more doing. Of course, there are times when you need to say No. Of…

What Does It Mean to Go Creative?

We cannot help but be creative. Being creative came with being born. To go creative, though, is something else. First off let’s recognize that being or going creative is not an excuse to wear weird clothes or go naked, to grow your hair or your fingernails, to be rude, or weird, or addicted to chaos or drama. You may fancy doing any of those things, but they won’t make you more creative. And unless what you’ve set out to create is altered consciousness, half-witted behavior and a hangover, neither will doing alcohol or other drugs. Being curious and courageous, enthusiastic…

Go Creative! Series & The Creativist Club Next Intake

The blog and Monday Motivator will be taking a break during December, as we work to bring you our new format for 2018, alongside the release of my long-awaited Go Creative! series and the next intake of the Creativist Club. Our plans are super-exciting and you are going to love them. The Go Creative! series is a nine-book series, addressed to those I call “creative entrepreneurs”, people who (want to) create a values-based business and have a positive impact in the world. Those who will find the Go Creative! series of interest include authors, life coaches, healers, activists, artists, filmmakers,…

What Is Creative Success?

Like all interesting words, both “creative” and “success” have more than one definition and can mean wildly different things to different people. And creatives and creativists often define success differently and work from different drives and values to the conventional world. We follow less direct pathways, trust in a mysterious process and know we are not so much the drivers of our own success as the conduits for it. Whatever we want to make, and however we approach it, the sequence of creative success is always like this: Desire: You understand that you truly want something Intention: You frame that…

Creative Thought For Today: Two Kinds of Creative Breakthrough: Historic (hCreative) and Personal (iCreative)

When people talk about creative breakthrough, they often confuse two different things, using them interchangeably and confusingly. The first is creative breakthrough that is personal, I call it iCreative. A new development for one creative or creativist individual, something that particular person has never done, or known, or been before. You experience an idea or insight or achievement that is completely new for you. If you have an idea that you’ve have never had before, no matter how many people had the same idea already that idea is creative for you. iCreative. The second is breakthrough that is historical, a…
